Set To Thrive: Making an Impact - An Interview with Our President & CEO
Set To Thrive recently published our 2026 Impact Sheet, which highlights the results of our ongoing efforts to support children and youth in Alameda and Contra Costa counties experiencing foster care and homelessness. Since 2021, we have delivered more than 4,300 bags, including over 1,200 Thrive Bags, special requests from school districts, and Student Bags.
While the numbers are impressive, they tell only part of the story. We recently sat down with our President & CEO, Lisa Henderson, to discuss Set To Thrive’s real impact.
The numbers are incredible. When you look at Set To Thrive’s impact in just a few years, what comes to mind?
Lisa: When I look at the numbers behind Set To Thrive’s impact, I feel both amazed and deeply humbled.
In just under five years, we’ve supported over 4,300 children with Thrive Bags and back-to-school backpacks—each one filled with essentials and a reminder that they are seen, valued, and cared for.
We’ve built strong partnerships with social service agencies across Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, and we’re now working with 10 school districts to reach even more youth who need support.
But what stands out most isn’t just the numbers—it’s the community behind them. None of this would be possible without the incredible support of people who believe in showing up for our most vulnerable children.
It’s a powerful reminder that when we come together with purpose, we can create meaningful, lasting impact. And that is something that will never stop inspiring me.
What has been the biggest reason for Set To Thrive’s success thus far?
Lisa: The biggest reason behind Set To Thrive’s success is simple: our community.
From the very beginning, when I first shared the idea, the response was overwhelming in the best way. People didn’t hesitate—they asked, “What can I do?”
That spirit of generosity and action is what has carried us forward. Our volunteers, donors, and corporate partners are truly the backbone of Set To Thrive. Their willingness to show up, give, and uplift this mission is what makes everything possible.
We could not do this work alone—and we never have. Together, we are creating real impact for children who need it most.
And the most powerful part? We’re just getting started.
What is your vision for how Set To Thrive’s impact will expand over the next few years?
Lisa: Looking ahead, my vision for Set To Thrive is rooted in both growth and deeper impact.
We will continue to serve our local community while expanding our Thrive Bag program into additional counties—reaching even more children who deserve comfort, dignity, and support during challenging times.
I’m especially excited about a new program we’re currently building: providing scholarships for youth in foster care who want to pursue post-secondary education—whether that’s vocational training or college.
This is about more than financial support. It’s about believing in these young people, celebrating their resilience, and equipping them with the tools they need to succeed in life.
Because every child deserves not just support for today—but opportunity for their future.
If you could wave a wand to make a wish for Set To Thrive to come true, what would it be?
Lisa: If I could wave a magic wand, my wish would be simple—every child in foster care would have everything they need to truly thrive.
They didn’t choose this path, and it’s never their fault. Yet so many are still missing the basics: a safe and stable home, mental health support, consistent access to food and clothing, strong educational support, and caring mentors who believe in them.
If I’m being honest, my greatest wish would be that organizations like Set To Thrive wouldn’t even be needed—because the system would fully support every child, exactly as they deserve.
Until that day comes, we will continue to show up, fill the gaps, and surround these children with the care, dignity, and opportunity they deserve.
